📖 Understanding Raavi Font

Raavi is a Unicode font for the Punjabi language using the Gurmukhi script. It was developed by Microsoft and has been included in Windows operating systems since Windows XP. The name "Raavi" comes from the Ravi River, one of the five rivers that give Punjab its name.

Why Raavi is Standard

  • • Pre-installed on all Windows versions
  • • Unicode compliant (international standard)
  • • Official font for Punjab government exams
  • • Supported by all major software
  • • Clear, readable design

Raavi vs Legacy Fonts

  • • Asees, Joy, etc. use non-standard encoding
  • • Legacy fonts don't work across systems
  • • Cannot be searched or indexed properly
  • • Raavi is the modern, correct choice
  • • All exams now use Raavi only

🔧 Comprehensive Troubleshooting Guide

❓ Number keys not working in Raavi?

Problem: When typing in Punjabi, pressing number keys shows characters instead of numbers.

Solution:

  1. Punjabi numbers (੦੧੨੩੪੫੬੭੮੯) are mapped to number keys by default
  2. To type English numbers, switch to English keyboard temporarily
  3. On laptops, make sure Num Lock is ON
  4. Some applications allow mixing - check application settings

❓ Font showing boxes or question marks?

Problem: Punjabi text appears as empty boxes (□) or question marks.

Solution:

  1. The application doesn't have Punjabi font support
  2. Try changing the font to "Raavi" in the application
  3. If using old software, it may not support Unicode
  4. Reinstall the font or repair Windows if issue persists

❓ Cannot find Punjabi keyboard option?

Problem: Punjabi language not available in keyboard settings.

Solution:

  1. Go to Settings → Time & Language → Language & region
  2. Click "Add a language"
  3. Search for "ਪੰਜਾਬੀ" or "Punjabi"
  4. Select the first option and install
  5. You may need to restart after installation

❓ Half letters (ੱ) not appearing correctly?

Problem: Addak (ੱ) appears separately instead of above the letter.

Solution:

  1. This is usually an application rendering issue
  2. Make sure you're using a Unicode-compliant application
  3. MS Word, Chrome, and modern apps handle this correctly
  4. Type the addak AFTER the consonant it modifies

❓ Keyboard layout different from what I learned?

Problem: Keys produce different characters than expected.

Solution:

  1. Windows uses the Inscript layout by default
  2. If you learned phonetic typing, you need different software
  3. PSSSB exams use Inscript layout - practice accordingly
  4. Use our virtual keyboard to learn the correct layout
